Branded as Sugandhagiri Coffee, the shop offers products from coffee that are specially blended to enrich the taste and aroma of Robusta coffee grown at Sugandhagiri region. The shop also offers a variety of native dishes to promote ethnicity.
Coffee is the most promising crop of Wayanad with its legacy for more than a century. The district grows around 50,000 to 60,000 tonnes of robusta coffee annually, making it the most prominent region in the State cultivating the variety. Sugandhagiri tribal settlement covers an area of 1100 ha where 90% area is cultivated with Coffee, Pepper, Ginger and Turmeric which are grown under rich native trees providing a natural ecosystem

HDFC Bank Parivartan project, implemented by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation envisaged addressing the livelihood opportunities for 85 families covering over 200 Advasi families of Suganadhagiri. The project is aiming for effective integration of coffee value addition with sustainable cultivation practices, trying to train them to adopt proper coffee cultivation practices so that they could increase their production and income. Training and capacity building programmes are initiated for the groups and project support for a coffee hulling machine, roasters, powdering machine were also provided to the stakeholders.
Eleven Adivasi farmers under the umbrella of Sugandhagiri Development Tribal Society are involved in this business of operating the Sugandhagiri Coffee Shop which is a very unique model of tribal farmer’s business since its operating completely at the local markets with a commodity like coffee.
Dr V Shakeela Director, MSSRF CAbC welcomed the gathering and narrated about interventions of MSSRF at Sugandhagiri. The inauguration of the shop was done by Mr Samshad Marakkar, District Panchayath President. In his inaugural remarks, he emphasized the importance of coffee cultivation in Wayanad and the brand value of Wayanadan Products with its exceeding marketing options. He also briefed the schemes and policies taken up by authorities to promote such brands with special reference to Coffee and Spices.
The inauguration of the coffee value addition unit was done by Ms Anas Rosna Stephy, President, Pozhuthana Grama Panchayath. The logo release event of the product was done by Mr NC Prasad, Member, District Panchayath along with Ms Jisha V, AGM (DD), NABARD Wayanad. Mr Shijil, HDFC Bank, Ms Thushara, Member, Pozhuthana Grama Panchayath,Mr N. Gopalakrishnan, Mr Jose Sabestain, Mr KV Divakaran, Dr TR Suma, Dr Tintu, Coffee Board, Mr KV Raman delivered felicitation remarks
