Awareness Programme for School Students on Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Agriculture & Climate Change

Community Agrobiodiversity Centre (CAbC), M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, Wayanad in collaboration with Kerala State Council for Science & Technology organized a two day Awareness Programme for School Students on Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Agriculture & Climate Change held on 8-9 March 2021.


The aim of the programme was to bring together a variety of school students to make them aware about the importance of biodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture & climate change. All 50 participants showcased a diverse and heterogeneous group representing eight schools in and around Wayanad. A welcome address was put forward by Dr. Shakeela, Director, CAbC and key note address was delivered by Dr. Anil Kumar, Senior Director, CAbC. Dr. Kumar urged on the importance of biodiversity and motivated the students on conservation of flora and fauna around us. He also emphasized on the fact that ‘Every student should be a scientist’ and focus on learning science and include it in their life in general.

Informative sessions were taken on ‘Role of students in Biodiversity conservation’ by Mr. Sivan V.V. ‘Sustainable Agriculture and its importance’ by Mr. Joseph John., ‘Bio cultural heritage – A tool to protect biodiversity’ by Mrs. Suma T.R and ‘Climate change and its challenges’ by Dr. Ratish R.L.

A poster competition and quiz competition was also organized to channel the creativity and wisdom of the students. Group activities were also formulated in between the sessions as well to make the programme interactive throughout. Towards the end, a brief cultural programme was also formulated and participants enjoyed a lot while showcasing various talents like singing and dancing! Prizes were awarded to winning students at the end of the programme. Feedback session was also set up meanwhile to assess and evaluate the programme. Students gave a positive outlook on the programme and suggested to increase the tenure of the programme.
