Exhibition on Diversity of Mango
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation and Wynad Agri Marketing Producer Company limited (Wampco) jointly organized two-day fest – Mampazha Peruma with a theme to showcase the diversity of the native mango varieties of Wayanad on 20-21 May 2019 at Kalpetta.
Sri Cheruvayal Raman, the traditional farmer, inaugurated the fest. During the inaugural address, he pointed out about various recipes made out of native mangos and its close association in the traditional food baskets. Sri V.V Sivan, Head (I/C), CAbC MSSRF spoke about the loss of genetic diversity in mangos and he stressed the necessity to conserve such varieties.
Eighteen traditional varieties of mangos were collected and displayed during the fest. Prominent native mango variety like –Wayanad Manga, Theen Managa, Kattu Manga, Perrakka Manga, Ollur Manga, Adakka Manga, Ko manga, and Moovandan Manga. Other than mango, fruits like Avakkdo, papaya, butter fruit, jack fruit, native citrus fruits were also displayed during this fest.
Wynad Agri Marketing Producer Company limited (Wampco) coordinated sales during the fest, through which varieties of mangoes – Alpohsa , Raspuri, Sindoor, Malgova, Mallika, Neelam, Imam Pasand, Guddadat, Banganapally as well as mango based value added products made available for sales. The visitors could purchase crafted mango seedlings of -*Mallika , Chandrakaram, Neelam, Amrapali, Paiyur, Alphonsa, Prior, Banganapally *.
The two-day fest paved a platform for the public to familiarize the diversity of mangoes.
