Helping hands in the time of the pandemic
With any disease outbreak, vulnerable sections of society face the brunt at a higher level than the major community. The same was the case in Kerala, apart from the general population; the repercussions seemed to affect the poor section of the society more. Seeing the emerging pandemic, the Community Agrobiodiversity Centre came into the picture to render its services in curbing the disease spread again this year..
The centre outreached to around 600 households spread across 35 villages across Kerala through effective wielding of science and technology to check the spread of Covid-19 disease in villages. Prompt and appropriate scientific interventions were led to arrest the spread of disease in these villages in right collaboration with various state and central government departments. The resources of the institute along with the support of the government were crucial in arresting the growth of Covid-19 wherein both entities worked as a well oiled machine to curtail the spread. Among the 35 villages, 15% of the population belonged to the tribal community and they were the most affected by the outbreak in the social demographic of the district. In the tribal villages, the gravity of the situation was so compelling that the institution had to take immediate measures or otherwise the villagers might have succumbed to the disease.
